महर्षि वाल्मीकि वैदिक काल के महान ऋषियों में से एक माने जाते है। उनका जन्म दिवस आश्विन मास की सरद पूर्णिमा के दिन मनाया जाता है।

इस वर्ष, महर्षि वाल्मीकि का जन्म दिवस 20 अक्टूबर को होने वाला है।

वे संस्कृत भाषा के आदि कवि और आदि काव्य ‘रामायण की रचयिता के रूप में सुप्रसिद्ध है।

वे महर्षि कश्यप और अदिति के नवम पुत्र- वरुण आदित्य, से जन्मे थे। वरुण को प्रचेत के नाम से भी जाना जाता था, इसलिए उन्हें प्रचेतस् नाम से उल्लेखित किया जाता है।

साथ ही वाल्मीकि को ‘अग्निशर्मा’ के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

मनुस्मृति के अनुसार प्रचेता, वशिष्ठ, नारद, पुलस्त्य आदि इन्के भाई थे। उनके माता का नाम चषरणी और वे भृगु के भाई थे।

उपनिषद के विवरण के अनुसार यह भी अपने भाई भृगु की भांति परम ज्ञानी थे।

हिन्दू पौराणिक कथाओ के अनुसार एक बार वे ध्यान में बेठे हुए थे जब उनके शरीर को चीटियों ने अपना घर बनाकर ढक लिया था।

साधना पूरी कर जब वह चीटियों की मिट्टी की बांबी (जिसे वाल्मीकि कहते है उससे बाहर निकले तो लोग इन्हे वाल्मीकि कहने लगे।

वाल्मीकि जयंती के उत्सव को चिन्हित करने के लिए कुछ अनुयायी और अलग – अलग समुदाय शोभा यात्रो और सत्संगों का आयोजन करते है।

Maharishi Valmiki is considered one of the great sages of the Vedic period. His birthday is celebrated on the day of Sarad Purnima in the month of Ashwin.

This year, Maharishi Valmiki’s birthday is going to be on 20 October.

He is well-known as the Adi Kavi of Sanskrit language and the author of Adi Kavya ‘Ramayana’.

He was born to Maharishi Kashyap and Aditi’s ninth son- Varun Aditya. Varuna was also known as Pracheta, hence he is referred to as Prachetas.

Also, Valmiki is also known as ‘Agnisharma’.

According to Manusmriti, Pracheta, Vashishtha, Narada, Pulastya, etc. were his brothers. His mother’s name was Chasrani and he was the brother of Bhrigu.

According to the description of the Upanishad, he was also as knowledgeable as his brother Bhrigu.

According to Hindu mythology, once he was sitting in meditation when his body was covered by ants making it their home.

After completing his sadhana, when he came out of the earthen Bambi of ants (which is called Valmiki), people started calling him Valmiki.

Some followers and different communities organize processions and Satsangs to mark the celebration of Valmiki Jayanti.
